The Spotlight is on Browns: An open letter from Design Consultant, Linda Abbott

You’ve heard us say it once, you’ll hear us say it again and again, when designing your home or space, it is crucial to have a clear vision in mind of what you want before hiring an interior designer or landscape architect. It’s also important to think timeless, rather than trendy when investing in your home.

As we shift into 2018, change is on our mind, and what better way to greet the New Year than to update your home decor? Though all trends this past year have pointed to bold colors and statement pieces, StoneHardscapes lead design consultant, Linda Abbott, breaks the mold, with a few suggestions of her own. Check out what she has to say:

Today, designers place a great deal of emphasis on vibrant colors and statement pieces that pop, making the earth tones take the back seat.

Well, I’ll have to respectfully disagree. When it comes to design, I truly believe less is more and timeless is always the way to go.

Decorating with earth tones creates a rich, warm and inviting environment within a space. As a neutral base, this earth tone is the anchoring color that allows homeowners to accessorize their space by adding colors that pop with artwork, textiles, etc.

For the past 18 years, I’ve taken great pride in creating a dream space for my clients, always guiding them towards the neutral choices for their interior and exterior flooring. It provides them with more variety throughout the year, allowing them to change their accessories to accommodate their moods, the seasons and the holidays.

I once had a client tell me, If I feel like red, then I add red pillows. If I get bored with red and want blue, I’ll add blue pillows or a rug with those hues. The brown earth tones go with anything, it makes it simple to switch out to accessories and still look great! As a designer, this is what I strive for to create a space that will transcend through the years to come.

If I may leave you with a designer tip, it would be this: trends will be forever changing; the key to creating your own personal sanctuary is to start with a neutral foundation, on which to build upon with color. Here are few incredible examples of an earth-tone oasis.
